Creating Lines Out of Dots
One of my best new practices, is to take a moment, every day, to reflect on the past and how it’s driving my future.
It’s akin to Mark Suster’s investment theory of Lines and Dots, where decisions should be made based on the lines between A (then) and B (now), rather than a single dot (moment in time).
Near the end of last year, I underwent a procedure known as Posterior Cervical Laminectomy, which kept me home for about two months. During that time, my short moments of reflection became longer. And as the days turned into weeks, one thing became clear: I knew what I am good at, but was unsure if my dots were turning into lines to get me there.
As much as we preach about focus and direction in building startups, we forget that the same applies to our own lives, and I knew that I needed to take the time to truly explore my line. So as of the end of January, I am leaving Blurb, a company whose mission I continue to support and believe in deeply, to explore what is next, wherever that line might take me.
(And, in case you are wondering, the first place my line is taking me is to various coffee shops to spend a bit more time writing. Perhaps my line runs through the next great American novel...)
